Scene 13 cafe (Clips should be run through a filter to sound low-quality) Narrator 201: The story so far- Pan, Picado and Oliver have gone to an abandoned dimension to retrieve some magical stones. There, they encountered a strange being- a living restaurant. Cafe 007: I am the restaurant. Picado 023: Wait a minute. Everything around us? Even the food? Narrator 202: Meanwhile, Bingler the dwarf, disguised as an otter, has found his way to the burrow of Oren, the magician of transformation. Oren 021: What can I do for you, mister dwarf? Bingler 007: Dwarf? Oh, no. i'm just an otter, like yourself. Oren 022: Hardly. You walk like someone who's been bipedial all of his life. A humanoid, to be precise... Narrator 203: Bingler has promised Oren a family of his own, but what Oren does not know is that Bingler is actually an agent of Nexicul, the evil tree spirit. Bingler 017: That's right, Oren. I'd like you to meet my friend. Of course, this zombie mouse is only a sort of remote terminal. His real self is much more impressive. Oren, meet Nexicul. Oren 033: whatever you're planning, I won't let you get away with it. mouse 002: Oh, but you already have! You wished for a family, and that's exactly what you'll get. Narrator 204: Only a few individuals have any inkling of the danger to the magician, including Malcrum and Flaire. Malcrum 002: Something is wrong Braze 001: More bombs? Malcrum 003: No... But something evil. Flaire 002: ...I feel compelled to travel toward the farm village. Something is definitely amiss there. Narrator 205: Down in the deep, the nageel emperor hears some dire predictions about his reign. Witch 012: The son will slay the father, and be slain by the emperor, and the emperor shall be turned to stone. Emperor 029: what in the sea is THAT supposed to mean? Narrator 206: And now, we rejoin Pan and company at the cafe. (begin original dialogue.) Picado 201: Who is in danger, Cafe? Cafe 201: It's... I don't know. I lost it. In any case, I do not believe Nexicul himself has come here. He tried, but the locals killed his hireling. They could not defeat his zombies, but they stood as strong as they could. If only they had known what they were up against, I wonder if they would have been so strong. Pan 201: If Nexicul’s zombies are here, we need to move quickly. We should get the stones and get back to the Island. Cafe 202: I understand. I hope that you can return some day. Pan 202: Count on it. Scene 14 Farm village sfx: rain Flaire 201: Who's that coming out of Amanda's house? Grant 201: I don't know, but I don't like him. Bingler 201: Top of the morning, friends. Flaire 202: You there, who are you? Bingler 202: Me? I'm nobody. Grant 202: Will you come here please? Bingler 203: I, uh... Grant 203: HERE. sfx: running Flaire 203: I knew he was going to run. I've got him. sfx: very fast quardupedial running Flaire 204: HIYA! sfx: tumbling on the ground Bingler 204: Don't hurt me! It wasn't my idea! I was just following orders! Flaire 205: Whose orders? Bingler 205: The tree spirit! Mouse 201: Silence! Flaire 206: Who's your friend? mouse 202: say nothing! Bingler 206: I can't say anything or... Flaire 207: Tell me what I want to know of I'll crush your windpipe in my jaws. Bingler 207: The mouse is an avatar of Nexicul! He has to get this dimension before Prince Selv gets it. mouse 203: I'll not warn you again! Flaire 208: Who do you fear more, the mouse or me? Bingler 208: I... but... he... Flaire 209: TALK! Bingler 209: He tried to take the island by forming an alliance with Farron of the nageel, but it didn't work, so he's trying a new plan, but he had to take out the... (gagging, choking) Flaire 210: What are you doing? Mouse 204: I warned you to hold your tongue! Flaire 211: You. You're killing him! Bingler 210: (choking) Pan! He's going to kill Pan! (dies) Flaire 212: You! Mouse 205: Go ahead. Kill this body. I'm done with it. You can't harm me and you can't stop my plan. Flaire 213: Gladly. sfx: crunching sound Grant 204: Let's hope we're not too late to reach Pan. sfx: explosion Grant 205: What was that? Flaire 214: It came from the reef village. Grant 206: You go find Pan. I'll take care of this. Scene 21 Underwater Nageel #1 201: What sort of madness is this, anyway? You attack the Reef Village and run away? Farron 201: Be careful how you speak to me. Nageel #1 202: You know full well who is speaking to you. Farron 202: (hissing) Yes, I do, but THEY don't know that! Do you want to give away everything we've worked for? Nageel #1 203: It's a bit late for that, don't you think? Your invasion failed. Farron 203: Oh, did it? Nageel #1 204: You haven't gotten me the gate. Farron 204: That's right. But think about it... what would have happened if the invasion had succeeded? Nageel #1 205: The gate would be mine. Farron 205: And the island would belong to my father. Do you honestly think HE would give you gate access free and clear? Nageel #1 206: What is your plan, then? Farron 206: My father must be removed from the picture. Nageel #1 207: Then we must kill him. Farron 207: Not directly! The nageel people are nothing if not loyal to the emperor. If they discover that I killed him, I'll be lynched in a heartbeat. If they found out YOU killed him, they'd see to it that neither you nor your zombies ever set foot on the sandbar. Nageel #2 201: My prince! Farron 208: What is it, soldier? Nageel #2 202: The patrols report all clear. We haven't been spotted. Farron 209: Good. How much of that conversation did you overhear? Nageel #2 203: I... uh... Nothing, my Prince. Farron 210: That's good, but I can't be too careful. Nexicul, please neutralize him. Nageel #1 208: How long do you suppose he can hold his breath underwater? Farron 211: He's a nageel! Nageel #1 209: As a cat? Nageel #2 204: Wait, I didn't mean to... sfx: (electricity, bubbling) Farron 212: (laughing) Nageel #1 010: (laughing) Farron 213: I like your style. Come. we have work to do. scene 15 mines Oliver 201: I have the yellow stones, Pan. Pan 203: and I have the blue. Let's get back to the gate. Picado, is it clear? Picado 202: There's a group of zombies about two hundred yards away. They seem to be oblivious to us. We can move safely if we move quietly. (pause) zombie #1 201: So nice of you to join me. I thought you'd never make it back here. Picado 203: Bipf! The zombies have us surrounded! Pan 204: say nothing. They can’t take the stones unless we give them away. Keep your mouths shut! Zombie #2 201: Give me the stones. Zombie #3 201:Give me the stones! Zombie #4 201: I will have them. Zombie #5 201: I can hurt you. I can torture you for hours without killing you. Pan 205: (slowly, thoughtfully) Why do you want the stones? Zombie #1 202: There is a world I desire. Would you like to hear about it? Zombie #2 202: So careful not to give away any permission. You respond with a look. Such a clever creature. Zombie #3 202: It is called the hundredth vale. It is a land where the children have survived a terrible plague by being transformed into toy animals. When I absorb their life force, they will make nearly indestructible warriors. Pan 206: What does that have to do with stones? zombie #4 202: The code to reach this world requires seven of the blue stones. You will give me those stones, and I will watch with delight the look on your face when you realize that you sold the souls of children to stop the pain. Picado 204: You want the stones? Go get them! sfx: stones scattering Picado 205: RUN! Pan 207: You Idiot! Picado 206: Don't worry. Those were pearls from the oysters I had at the restaurant. I’ve been keeping them in my mouth. Pan 208: I’m not talking about that. You ordered Nexicul’s zombies to get the stones. They have permission, now! Scene 16 Cafe sfx: door and bell Pan 209: Cafe! Hide us! cafe 203: Please place a sample of your... Pan 210: We don't have time for this! AUGH! Picado 207: Pan, your hand! Pan 211: Five zombies are after us. We need a place to hide! Cafe 204: This way, quickly! Stay here in the freezer. Chew a piece of ice every few minutes so that I can stay in contact with you. Whatever you do, do NOT open this door, no matter what you may hear or smell. Understand? Pan 212: Got it. sfx: soft door closing Oliver 202: What do you think he's going to do? Picado 208: Pan, your hand... Pan 213: Yes. There was no time, so I thrust my hand into the basket. It stings pretty badly. Picado 209: The zombies. They're here. zombie #1 203 zombie #2 203 zombie #3 203 zombie #4 203 zombie #5 202: (screaming) Oliver 203: What are they doing to him? Pan 214: Sush, Oliver. Come over here with us and be very, very quiet. (fade out) scene 17 Oliver 204: seems like it's been hours. Is it safe to come out? Picado 210: I'll check. sfx: crunching Picado 211: Cafe says it's okay. sfx: soft door opening Cafe 205: (weeping) Oliver 205: The zombies are gone. Picado 212: No sign of them. Cafe, you... you ATE them, didn't you? Cafe 206: Yes. I did. Pan 215: You did the right thing. Cafe 207: Oh, I know that. Those poor creatures... possessed by that devil all these years. I did them a favor by destroying their bodies. Pan 216: They didn't hurt you, did they? Cafe 208: Not exactly. Pan 217: Then why are you crying? Cafe 209: When I consumed the zombies... I saw directly into Nexicul's evil heart. No one should ever have to see what I saw. The horrors... so much suffering... Pan 218: I'm sorry. Cafe 210: You must fight Nexicul. Take your stones. Use them to find others who hate evil as much as you do. Picado 213: Rest assured, we shall. Cafe 211: There is something you should know. Nexicul is in competition with several other powers who are trying to manipulate one another for control of the portals. One of them is a son of Oberon himself. He must possess twelve key worlds in order to control the multiverse. Yours is one of them. Pan 219: What can we do? Cafe 212: Both Nexicul and the son of Oberon are trying to recruit the nageel without their knowledge. The violence against your people will be increased manyfold. You must build alliances and stand strong against the nageel or your people will be driven into the sea and your portal will be defenseless. Pan 220: (weakly) Thank you. Cafe 213: Go, now. Get those stones safely back home. But please come back again. Pan 221: Of course. Scene 18 gate, far side Oliver 206: Oh, it's going to be so good to get back home. Picado 214: There's the gate. Hang on... Pan 222: What is it? Picado 215: Smoke. A huge column of it coming from the far side of the island. Flaire 215: Pan! Are you all right? And your team, are they all right? Pan 223: we're fine. What happened? Flaire 216: A nageel attack on the Reef Village. One of them used two of the stolen stones to create a magic bomb. Poffle was nearly killed in the attack. Nobody WAS killed, thank Heavens, but a number of houses were destroyed. They’re still fighting the fires. Pan 224: So what are you doing here? Flaire 217: I was told that you were in danger. I came to the gate to try to find you and I found a group of zombies. I don't know how, but I knew they were connected to the bombing, and that they were going to try to prevent your return. Pan 225: They almost did. Flaire 218: I know. I was there. Pan 226: You what? Flaire 219: When Picado threw his pearls, the zombies dove for them as one. It took them a moment , but once those zombies realized you bolted, I ran through the portal and made them chase me. Of course, they couldn’t follow me back through the gate. I hoped I’d given you enough time to make a getaway. Pan 227: We would have gotten away. Flaire 220: Oh really? One of the zombies was a lion. There was also a deer and an elf. I'm the fastest otter on this island and I know -I- couldn't have outrun them for long. Pan 228: Hmph. Come, boys. We need to get our news to the king. Scene 19 Castle King 201: This is very interesting news, and distressing, but not unexpected. Pan 229: What do you want to do? King 202: We must establish trade with this sentient cafe you found. Picado 216: But your majesty, the nageel... King 203: Are still our primary enemy. But as much as they hate us, there is little anyone can do to stir their passions any hotter than they already are. Pan 230: But what of Nexicul and this new threat? King 204: Both wish to control the portals. Our people are capable of holding this portal as we have for many years. But this isn’t merely about us. To hold back Nexicul will take a concerted effort by a number of worlds. As there are hundreds of millions of dimensions, coordinating our efforts through direct contact will be impossible. We will need to establish a hub. Pan 231: I see, now. You want the Cafe to be that hub. King 205: Precisely. Though the communication process may be a trifle involved, it’s the most thorough means of communication possible. We will tell all of our trading partners about this and begin the establishment of a coalition. Pan 232: I see. King 206: From this day on, I’m giving you a new job, Pan. I want you to be our ambassador to the Cafe. Take some gifts to it. Whatever you deem appropriate. Take also any volunteers you can find. Teachers. Craftsmen. Historians. Storytellers. It has a lot to learn about us. Scene 20 Oren's house, night Amanda 201: Would you like some more tea, Miss Llama? And how about you, Mrs. Trout? How about another cookie? Oh my, is that the time? I should get to bed. Come on Mrs. Trout. sfx: blankets being moved Amanda 202: It sure is quiet tonight. (humming) I wish I had someone to read me a bedtime story. Like the one about the alien boy and the giant rat. Who was it who told me that one? sfx: rain Amanda 203: Something's wrong, Mrs. Trout. Doesn't it feel like something's wrong? It's like something is missing. I don't know what it is. It's like... something... (yawn) is supposed to... (mumbling) be... here that... isn't... (dreamy music) Narrator 207: In the depths of her slumber, Amanda begins to dream. Person #1 201: Princess Amanda! You have to help us! Amanda 204: What's the trouble good citizen? Person #1 202: The president has been kidnapped! Amanda 205: Don't worry! Me and my trusty sidekick Mrs. Trout will get him back for you! Right Mrs. Trout? Mrs. Trout: (bubbling) Person #2 201: It's not that simple. To rescue the president, you'll need the enchanted sword. Amanda 206: Right. Where is this enchanted sword? Person #3 201: The Spiders took it to cut down the forest! Amanda 207: Spiders? What spiders? Hey, wait a minute! Where is everyone going? Come back! I have to find the spiders and where they... Oh! Mrs. Trout, look! Mrs. Trout: (bubbling) Amanda 208: I don't know who it is. But he seems so familiar. Hello, stranger. Oren 201: (voice echoes as if distant) Help me! Amanda 209: Who are you? How can I help? Oren 202: Help me! Mrs. Trout: (bubbling) Amanda 210: It can't be my Daddy. I don't have a daddy. Oh, look! It's the spirit of the island! Spirit? You look all sad and rainy. What's the matter? Island: Shh! it is not safe to talk here. Amanda 211: Island! Your hand! What happened? You're missing a finger! Island: Go! Look for my finger. Oren 203: help me! Amanda 212: Who ARE you? Scene 22 Cafe sfx: restaurant ambiance Pan 233: How many does that make, then? Oliver 207: Let me see, That's us, Rat City, Insectivore City, Robot World, the Tierune, Cafe and the Elvin alliance, which covers 10 worlds. With the addition of the stone men, that makes seventeen worlds in the coalition. Pan 234: That's all well and good, but we need to move faster. Oliver 208: We've sent an emissary to Wunno, but no one has heard from him, yet. Same with the one we sent to Fort Crawlins. Pan 235: What of the emissary to Serra Dolan (sir-AH dole-ANN), the fairy world? Oliver 209: They turned him into a squirrel and sent him packing. Pan 236: How dare they!? Oliver 210: They're terrified of Nexicul. They don't even want his name mentioned. However, he did get a favorable response from the dryads. Pan 237: That's surprising. Oliver 211: They're tree spirits. They like squirrels. Picado 217: What about the hundredth vale? (silence) Picado 218: Did I say something wrong? Pan 238: The hundredth vale has fallen. Picado 219: You mean... Nexicul has...? Pan 239: No, not Nexicul. A sprite named Selv. Nexicul didn't know that Selv conquored the Hundredth Vale years ago and slaughtered its... inhabbitants. Picado 220: No! Cafe 214: I have good news, gentlemen. The pandataurs have elected to join the coalition. Their ambassador is writing his gate address on his napkin right now. Pan 240: Excellent. Oliver, get the address from them. I need to go relieve myself. Oliver 212: Yessir. Uh, Sir, the restroom is that way. Pan 241: Restrooms are for humans and elves! Oliver 213: Picado, shouldn't you go with him? Picado 221: My services aren't needed here. with the number of people coming and going from here, he's got the safety of the public eye. What could happen? scene 23 Deep underwater Narrator 208: Meanwhile, deep down in the underwater chasm... Nageel #3 201: Would you look at this? Nageel #4 201: I can't believe it! Farron 214: This, my loyal soldiers, is why our emperor is called "emperor". Nageel #5 201: It just goes on and on! Farron 215: Yesss! City after city was built within this canyon. (startled) what was that? Nageel #3 202: a whale, my Prince. We are not being followed. Farron 216: This is the place. The city of gold and ivory. Nageel #4 202: My prince, there are... people down there! Farron 217: Indeed there are. Nageel #4 203: I don't understand. Weren't these cities abandoned? Farron 218: They were, after the great war all but destroyed our people. This canyon has been uninhabbited for many years, as the coral formations can attest. But no longer. I am seeing to it personally that the nageel race returns to its former glory. Nageel #5 202: (light dawns) Your harem! These are your concubines! Farron 219: And my sons and daughters. There... in the tallest tower... what we seek is in there! Nageel #1 011: And what IS it we seek? Farron 220: The ancient texts tell us that an item of incredible power was kept here. It was never used because it could only be opened by a certain variety of enchanted knife. I now have such a knife. Look, there is the box in which it is encased. You, check for traps. Nageel #4 205: There is a trap, Sir. Stand back. sfx: dart going by Farron 221: That's it? Nageel #4 206: Not quite. Be ready... sfx: stone sliding Nageel #5 203: I don't understand.... That chamber opened, but there's nothing there. Farron 222: Almost nothing. Look... shark teeth. This chamber contained sharks who would attack anyone but the proper owner of the artifact. Only they've long since starved to death and turned to dust. Nageel #3 204: Go on, your highness! Open the box! Farron 223: It's... it's... Nageel #1 012: It's what? Farron 224: (furious) It's GONE! Nageel #4 207: Sir... what is that? Farron 225: A ring? well, now... perhaps this trip wasn't a TOTAL loss. sfx: bubbling Ghast 201: Who has summoned the slave of the ring? Farron 226: I, Prince Farron have summoned you. Are you the genie who the ancients kept in this box? Ghast 202: Genie? Ha! I wish! I'm a ghast. Faron: A ghost? Ghast 203: Not a ghost, a GHAST! Nageel #5 204: What IS a ghast, if you don't mind my asking? Ghast 204: (sighs) We're LIKE genies, but highly specialized. My power is to protect magical beings. I was employed as the guardian of the genie Mardam. Farron 227: Oh really? Ghast 205: Oh, yes. It was I who enchanted his shell so that it could only be opened with a neanderthal vorpal blade. One of my more brilliant ideas, I dare say, and that's saying something. Farron 228: So what can you do for magical beings? Ghast 206: (obviously puffed up) I can make them nearly invulnerable. I can stop them from ever aging. Not that Mardam ever needed that. I can increase their magical attacks a hundred fold! I can make them the most feared beings in the world! Farron 229: Do it! Ghast 207: What? Farron 230: make me the most feared nageel in all the world. Ghast 208: That's right... you're magical, aren't you? Dang. Fine. Here we go. Farron 231: (voice slowly deepening) Yes! YES! The power! The wondrous, marvelous POWER! Nageel #5 205: He's about to kill us all in a fit of heady power-madness, isn't he? Nageel #4 208: Probably, mate. Probably. Scene 24 Outside cafe Pan 242: (humming) Ah, that's much better! Now, which way was that cafe? I... Oh, hello there. I remember you. You're the ambassador for the snake-people. Are you lost? I... Naga 201: Who, me? Nagas never get lost in the wilderness. Pan 243: Oh, perhaps you could tell me then, which... Naga 202: You are Pan? Pan 244: Yes, yes. What can I do for... HEY! Naga 203: You can suffocate in my coils! Pan 245: (straining) No! Wh... Why? Naga 204: You started this whole "Anti- Nexicul coalition" thing. Well guess what... Nexicul didn't like it. He paid me very handsomely to get rid of you. Pan 246: (in hoarse whisper) help! Jinki 201: Hey! What are you doing to that creature!? Naga 205: Go away! This doesn't concern you! Jinki 202: HELP! Someone's being attacked! sfx: tramping through leaves elf #1 201: What's going on? Jinki 203: That reptile is strangling that fuzzy creature. elf #2 201: Drop the otter, naga! Naga 206: Stay back! I'm venomous and my speed is more than a match for you elves! Stone man 201: You teeth no can break rock. Naga 207: Stay back, stone man! I mean it! Stay back! stone man 202: Naga sleep. sfx: THUMP! stone man 203: See? Me make naga sleep. elf #1 202: Are you all right? elf #2 202: You're Pan, aren't you? stone man 204: Him hurt. Me get doctor. Jinki 204: Hang on... I've got a healing potion. Pan 247: You're... not... a delegate. What... are... you? Jinki 205: Don't let the spiky hair fool you. I'm a human. Jinki O'Gyoh's my name. Elf #1 203: I thought there were no humans left in this world. Jinki 206: There aren't. I'm... I'm trying to find my way home. Elf #2 203: We'll help you get home. But this otter needs our help first. let's get him back to the cafe. scene 25 Underwater Ghast 209: Did you enjoy yourself? Farron 232: Oh, yes! Nageel #1 013: Don't you think it was a bit gauche to kill your own troops? Farron 233: Tell me you've never done anything like that in an austentacious display of godlike power. Nageel #1 014: Not at all. It's much more efficient to assimilate your enemies rather than destroy them. Ghast 210: Well, good-bye. Farron 234: Where are you going? Ghast 211: Back in the ring, to sleep. I'm bushed. Farron 235: You can't leave now! Ghast 212: What, you think I'm going to be out here making you godlike all the time? As if! I have to recharge my batteries, you know. Nageel #1 015: How unfortunate. Perhaps if I were to take the ring back to my world and assimilate this creature... Ghast 213: NO! sfx: (small explosion) Nageel #1 016: GAH! Ghast 214: Hands off the ring, bub! Nageel #1 017: You dare strike the avatar of Nexicul? Ghast 215: Touch the ring again and you'll see what I dare! Hands off. And you... Don't you let that thing touch me while I'm sleeping! Nageel #1 018: That's quite the powerful ghast you have there. What are your plans for it? Farron 236: You'll see! (chuckles darkly) Oh yes, you'll see! scene 26 hospital King 207: Pan? How are you feeling? Pan 248: Oooooh... like someone dropped a boat on me. King 208: I'm afraid you won't be doing any work for a while. Pan 249: But I can still.... OWOWOW! King 209: You can rest here in the hospitl until your ribs are mended. That naga hurt you fairly badly. Pan 250: You're not kidding. King 210: Don't worry. We'll find another ambassador. Pan 251: Like who? King 211: Well, it is the king's job to oversee diplomatic relations with other worlds... Pan 252: YOU? OW! ow ow ow. No offense, Mij, but you can see what the enemy did to me. We can't take the chance of having our king seriously injured or even killed. King 212: Perhaps your protoge, then? Pan 253: Oliver? (with obviously false confidence) Yeah. Oliver. He'll do. Scene 27 Oren's house Amanda 213: Look at that rain, Mrs. Trout. It hasn't stopped raining for a week. It makes me feel so sad. Why won't it stop raining? why am I asking you? You're a toy. Of course, so am I, but I'm the alive kind. And yet... (pause) Amanda 214: I feel like I've forgotten something very important, and I think it has to do with WHY I'm a toy. Yes...
